George Town, Slowly.

A Journal from Forestay

George Town isn't a place to rush through. Some of our favourite moments happen between destinations—lingering over coffee, wandering quiet heritage streets, discovering tucked-away galleries, or sharing a meal you'll still be thinking about long after you've gone home.

Every recommendation on this page is based on places we've genuinely enjoyed and would happily share with our own friends and family.

This isn't a complete guide to Penang, nor is it meant to be. It's simply a collection of cafés, restaurants, museums, creative spaces and neighbourhoods that have become part of our own experience of the city.

Take what speaks to you, skip what doesn't, and leave room for the unexpected. Before heading out, we also recommend checking each venue's opening hours, as they may change without notice.

Morning Rituals

The day always feels a little slower over good coffee. Here are the coffee shops we recommend:

Ome by Spacebar
The Alley
AE Coffee
2F+ Coffee Roastery
Ocrabrew
Local Flavours

"Some days begin with coffee. The best ones continue around the table."

Tables Worth Gathering Around

From humble hawker stalls to family-run Nyonya restaurants and modern cafés, these are the meals we'd happily recommend to anyone visiting George Town. Some are well known, others are less obvious—but every one has earned a place on our list.

Toh Soon Coffee Shop
Teksen Zi Char
Moh Teng Pheow Teochew Kuih
Air Itam Laksa Hawker
Auntie Gaik Lean Nyonya
ChinaHouse Café

George Town is best explored on foot.

Its streets tell stories through weathered facades, intricate shophouses, temples, clan houses and quiet courtyards. Wander without too much of a plan and you'll often discover something unexpected around the next corner.

Here are a few places worth slowing down for.

Armenian Street
The Blue Mansion
Chew Jetty
Old Town
Love Lane
